A glyph is an element of writing. Two or more glyphs representing the same symbol, whether interchangeable or context-dependent, are called allographs; the abstract unit they are variants of is called a grapheme or character. Glyphs may also be ligatures, that is, compound characters, or diacritics.

Typografiassa glyyfi (kreikan sanasta γλύφη, glyfē 'kaiverrus') on kirjoitusmerkin esitysmuoto.

Erilaisia glyyfejä Unicode-kirjoitusmerkille LATIN SMALL LETTER A (U+0061): a \quad \mbox{a} \quad \boldsymbol{\alpha} \quad \mathfrak{a}.

First attested in 1727. From French glyphe < Ancient Greek γλυφή (gluphē) "carving" < γλύφω (gluphō) "I carve, engrave"
